Satan's Last Stand

Satan is a chained beast. Only you can unleash him.
He flees at the name of Jesus.
Are you anxious about the state of the world -- maybe even terrified as things seem to sink into lunacy? I don't blame you. When the world and our Church leaders all seem to be losing their minds and don't illustrate even a scrap of common sense, it's easy to be tempted to despair.

Don't! We are looking into a distorted fun house mirror. I want to offer an alternative way to view what's happening.

It isn't Satan's victory. It's his last stand. The absolute frenzy of evil we see is the devil pulling out all the stops in desperation. Like the man behind the curtain in the Wizard of Ox, he pushes buttons that create bursts of flame and uses all kinds of gimmicks to magnify his puny little worm of a self. "See me and all my pomps and works. Be afraid, be very afraid." Piffle!

Sadly, he fools many people. But ultimately, many will recognize the one who was "a liar and deceiver" from the beginning and turn back to Jesus Christ because he is irresistible. I'm confident that will happen if believers persevere in praying and witnessing to the love of Jesus Christ!

Remember that Good Friday was not a defeat. It was the greatest victory of all. So don't give the devil the satisfaction of your discouragement. As St. Jean Vianney said, he's a chained beast and can only hurt you if you let him.

The reason the Lord uses Mary as a channel of grace and a Mediatrix in salvation is because it makes Satan gnash his teeth. What an insult to have the womb of a holy, humble little teenager be the source of his smashing defeat.

So smile, persevere, never give up, and pray every day in thanksgiving to Our Blessed Lord and his holy Mother, Our Lady of Victory. And then call on St. Michael, the captain of Mary's legion of angels. "St. Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil...."

  1. A good meditation for the upcoming feast of the incarnation. March 25th is also the day Tolkien picked for the downfall of Sauron, presumedly because it's "little Christmas" (Christmas minus nine months).

  3. Thank you for today's blog, "Satan's Last Stand." This is just what I have been feeling lately - that the whole world has sunk into lunacy. I find myself especially distressed by the divisions caused by this election. It's unbelievable. I have experienced a terrible division within my own family that I'm having a very hard time putting into perspective.

As I was thinking about all this worldly commotion (and even the commotion within our Holy Church) and praying last night, it came to me that this is all a distraction intended to divert us from God. Now along comes your article which says it all so well.

Thank you, and God bless you for your good work.
